Worst concert?
You guys really missed out on the hasbeen parade that was Rock2Wellington here in NZ.
Check out the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock2Wgtn
After forcing mouthfuls of Red Bull with crushed viagra into them, the organisers wheeled out the likes of Kiss, Alice Cooper, Poison, Whitesnake and of course everpresent undead Ozzy Osbourne. Hearing his classics shakily sung like he was getting one of those chopping back massages was a moment to remember. As was the spectacular moment Alice Cooper was lifted a full seven inches from the stage on industrial wires.
The KISS army were out in force, their tired, wrinkled faces coated in black and white slop and pot bellies proudly bulging from atop cracked and splitting leather trousers. Even from the back of the stadium, you could make out the band grimacing and retching when the menopausal groupies lifted their faded t-shirts, flashing long lost funbags to the stage. One fan likened the view to dangling spaniels ears, another to coconuts in a wet sock
The effects and stage props were done by Weta workshop, famous for the Lord of the Rings movies and certainly the biggest cheer came when a pack of filthy orcs crawled out on the stage, thrusting and grinding at the audience and making lewd gestures with their fingers and tongues. Alas, twas only Poison who proceeded to wheeze and fart their way through their jaded repetoire.
Quote: "It was unfortunate that the organiser of the rock concert ended up with a loss of $750,000... Sprey blamed a range of issues for the lower turnout, including the "eerie emptiness" over Wellington during the weekend"
The low turnout and eerie emptiness strangely not attributed to the appalling rock show, it seems.
Whats the worst gig experience you've ever had?

Re: Worst concert?
Hah, that sounds like my nightmare
(I cant stand cheesy 80's rock...I think I may be allergic to it)
Worst gig for me....Hmm now there's a question.
I would have to say Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at Roskilde in '06. I had been looking forward to seeing CLYHSY for a good few months, finally got to the tent and they were just coming on stage. The sound engineer must have been deaf as a post because the levels were way off. Alec Ounsworth has an original voice so getting the levels for the gig is an absolute must. They ended up sounding like a bunch of cats being strangled so I walked out after two songs.
Saying this, I went to see them on their own show a few months later in Crawdaddy and they blew me away!

Re: Worst concert?
CYHSY are one of the most inconsistent live bands. Ive seen them do great shows some times and awful things the next.
Worst show for me that I can remember right now has got to be The Horrors in The Ambassador during last years NME rock tour. I dont usually care what a band looks like but the band sure as hell cared what they looked like. I think the lead singer was envisioning hundreds of flashbulbs going off as he walked from one end of the stage to the next and constantly doing twirls and poses like a catwalk model. I guess they thought they looked unique... in reality they looked like what would happen if The Cure were locked in a room for a couple of months without food and water and then set on by dogs.
All of this wouldnt matter if they sounded ok. They didnt. Garbled undescribably bad shouty punk indie rock metal I think. It was impossible to actually discern what was going on. I can only assume that they had bad sound or were drunk because apparently they arent meant to be this bad. The entire crowd gave up attempting to dance after the second song and looked confused for the remaining six. Id never seen such a poor reception to a band in Dublin before. Simply Awful.

Re: Worst concert?
U2 at the point.
I was in the nosebleeds and bono was the size of my thumbnail and no drinks allowed to the seats so i couldn't even just get locked and listent o the music.
Added to that I had flown home from San Francisco the night before and was still horribly jet lagged.
We left after 3 songs and went to the pub.
Vowed never to go to croker for a gig again and havn't since.

Justice
not for the gig itself but for the fact that I was out at the gates for most of the gig waiting for my ticket. then when i got in i spent the rest of the gig looking for friends. I got to enjoy about 2 songs

I heard one of the lads from justice tried to get some crowd participation going but the crowd were having none of it
Re: Worst concert?
I have to agree with the Justice concert having one of the worst audiences I have ever been surrounded with.
My worst concert experience must have been Slayer at a festival in the Pyrenees called Doctor Music Festival. I still ask myself what was I doing there... Oh well, a friend begged so badly I felt sorry for him and went over. But what the hell was I thinking?
Oh, and second worst would be Mike Patton and Fennesz together trying to scare every living soul with that horrible wall of irritating crackling noise.

Think I'm going to have to update this,
My new worst gig has to be The Streets at the recent Bud Rising festival. Mike Skinner cannot sing...hes absoloutely fucking useless. I really liked The Streets first album but my god the dude just shouldn't do live shows.
Luckily Mixmaster Mike played afterwards to brighten up the night

Justice in the phoenix park was dire indeed
Re: Worst concert?
The Deftones in the Ambassador June-ish '06. Worst sound i have ever encountered at a gig. All you could hear were guitars and distorted vocals. The only way you knew there was a drummer was seeing the cymbals move once in a while! Awful.
Closely followed by "Extreme" Fest in the RDS (Motorhead, Raging Speedhorn, One Minute Silence, No Means No, etc.) So "Extreme" that people were being thrown out for dancing and the freak show was shut down because kids were crying! Thankfully the guy that put this fiasco together for Aikens was fired soon after.
That's my 2 cents!

Probably Maps for Bud Rising last month at the Button Factory. lead singer looked as though he crawled out of bed, played his 3 best songs first. we snoozed through rest of the set. as if not being able to drink anything but Bud could become worse.

I had a free ticket for that I tried to give away. I dont feel so bad now that it didnt get used.

Mix Master Mike was excellent as always! I was lucky enough to get a snap with him afterwards....he's very small but really nice!gary wrote:

I have to say I enjoyed the Streets gig. I was never a big fan but it was a lively gig. The sit down - jump bits were great. A friend got a video of the crowd doing it taken from the sound box at the back and it looks excellent!
BTW Gary, did you catch any of the break dancing at the back during MMM's set?
Re: Worst concert?
Nope? I was too busy going between MMM and the small little rave in the tent beside the Guitar Hero stage....about 15 people, a DJ and a set of decks jammed into this little tiny tent...it was fucking awesomecatch22rush wrote:gary wrote: BTW Gary, did you catch any of the break dancing at the back during MMM's set?
Re: Worst concert?
Hmm.....It's hard to pick the worst but some memorably bad ones were:
Ani DiFranco - Tripod '07: Used to quite like her when I was a bit younger but I almost cried this gig was fo bad. Pseudo-feminist SHITE! At one point I thought she was talking to the audience but it turned out to be a 10 minute spoken word piece on why all men can't be feminists......kill me......
Killers - Oxegen '05 (?): Beautiful weather, everyone on a great festival buzz and the Killers came out and gave the most lack lustre dull as poxy dishwater performance imaginable.
Regina Spektor - Tripod '07: Gig was fantastic musically but the management decided that the air conditioning would be too loud so the place was a total sweat box.....literally soaked to the skin upon leaving having not even danced at all.
Bloc Party - Phoenix Park '07: The average age at the gig was about 15 and Bloc Party were so drunk on stage it was embarassing.....not an impressive performance by one of my fav bands.....

Re: Worst concert?
Killers at Oxegen 05? when they were in the new band tent??
Re: Worst concert?
05 They were on the mainstage and I agree it was a phoned in performance. Might as well have been the cd and a cardboard cutout of the band.
Quick recap of Oxegens.
04 - Some sun, some rain. The Darkness putting on a terrible show after being drafted in to replace Bowie ( )
05 - really really hot, dusty, Audioslave playing rage tracks possibly being one of the best Oxegen moments.
06 - Windy, rainy, not too muddy. Arctic Monkeys getting the worst weather.
07 - Mudbath

Re: Worst concert?
My first Oxegen was '04 and it was bleedin' raintastic but line up was excellent. FInally got to see The Cure
'05 was scorchio and I agree Audioslave were fcuking excellent
'06 was abject misery.....I was so pissed off with the weather I stayed in the one tent all day and Whipping Boy of all bands cheered me up. I was on flying form by the time the Go! Team came on and wandered home in the rain to the sounds of The Who.....so I suppose it's wasn't all bad.
'07 Wild horses couldn't drag me to Scumfest again......
Just to add a worst gig in there Wolfgang Flur at the Sliabh an Iarainn festival in Drumshambo last year was bollocks....he can sure milk that Kraftwerk association!

Worst Gigs
Razorlight, Oxegen, '06 & '07 - These guys are the Rory Delap of live bands.
Counting Crows, Olympia '04 (I think) - Chinese Water Torture only you're less likely to be able to sing along.
Prodigy, The Point, '94 - Big inflatable hornet that didn't inflate was the highlight.

I didn't know Johnny Borrell was a Sunderland fan.
Re: Worst concert?
Slane - the year that stereophonics headlined. Nickleback played and proceeded to play 'this is how you remind me' at least 3 times. I sh1t you not. Terrible, absolutely terrible.

Kanye west in the point about 4 years ago,
waited ages for him to come on, then played for 45 mins
he shhhh-ed people when they sang with him and wouldn let them clap until he wanted them to the arrogant prick
There are better ways to spend 50e

Re: Worst concert?
I was there too and the gig was great except for the lack of A/C. I know her music is more on the quiet side but I don't mind having an air conditioner going on in the background if it makes things more comfortable. They did at least turn it back on for a short while between the main set and the encore. I emailed them to complain about it but never heard back.flurkboy wrote:Regina Spektor - Tripod '07: Gig was fantastic musically but the management decided that the air conditioning would be too loud so the place was a total sweat box.....literally soaked to the skin upon leaving having not even danced at all.

I like experimental and was actually looking forward to it but there was THREE (sh!t) supports (one was good, but there was so much shite that night, you were depressed that they had ended), patton/fennesz were at least 30 minutes late and their set was shorter than some of the supports. Also, Patton, when he came on after about 20 minutes, checked the setup, threw a sh!t-fit, swore at the equipment and stormed off, only to keep the audience waiting again. So pissed off at the whole setup and lateness we left a couple of songs in.
'Twas hilarious watching all of the 16 year old FNM fans faces drop when they heard the music. Heh.
Awful gig.
My vote is for Kimya Dawson's recent gig where all of the charm and good songs that she had at her gig in the Lower Deck disappeared at the Crawdaddy gig. Oh, and she played Children's Songs. Lots of them. About poo and dinosaurs. To a bunch of 20-30 year olds. For about half her set. *sigh*
Re: Worst concert?
I enjoyed Kimya Dawsons gig. Shes been odd(er) since her kid came on the scene doing all the kid stuff but I saw her in Primavera the year before so I was kind of prepared for it.
Mike Patton and Fennesz was in the Village right? Not surprised Patton had a sh!t fit at the setup. Most things sound awful in that venue.

I actually didn't mind the Mike Patton/Fennesz gig. It was nothing spectacular but I didn't hate it. The thing that pissed me off was the audience they were absolute idiots there was a guy there with a t-shirt that said "Mike Patton is God" that was embarassing hamarkw999 wrote:Oh god, I was there.vidanes wrote: Oh, and second worst would be Mike Patton and Fennesz together trying to scare every living soul with that horrible wall of irritating crackling noise.

Yeah MMM did a good set at the start, then he got crap for a while and then bootsied out the last bit and it rocked, hard.
The whole thing was free though so I can't really complain too much about the Streets wackness. Plus the did serve Guiness which is more then I could get at the Iggy Pop gig by Heiniken.
Re: Worst concert?
I was at Oxegen 06 and 07, in spite of the mudfest in 07 I loved it for the music, I caught Brian Wilson who is up there as one of the best performances I've ever seen. Daft Punk? Killers? No thanks, Brian Wilson please.
Regarding worst performances, I'm gonna go with Razorlight 07, Kooks 06 and 07 and Kaiser Chiefs 06. All at Oxegen. Kaiser Chiefs especially, I suppose he's a bit of a showman but they sounded absolutely awful to be honest, I was grateful for some of the Chillis more melodic stuff (though I have to say they didn't live up to expectations).
Honourable mention to Glasvegas recently supporting Muse. Absolutely terrible. All the songs sounded the same, I dunno if he was tryin to be Bono but the silent type - you'd think a Bono that doesn't speak would be a godsend wouldn't ya? Not so.

Every time I see KC on TV, Ricky is doing the exact same thing. He stands in front of the drummer, clapping his hands, he runs down into the crowd, he climbs the stage supports... it's almost like clockwork!Touted wrote:Regarding worst performances, I'm gonna go with ... Kaiser Chiefs 06.

Smashing Pumpkins at the RDS last February. Absolutely terrible. Sure they played for 2 and a half hours, but most of it was from Zeitgeist The closest thing they had to a proper stage set was the light bouncing off Billy Corgan's head. Still can't believe I wasted sixty euro on a ticket
Re: Worst concert?
Contender for most confused sentence?!Touted wrote:I'm gonna have to add Sex Pistols. Nothing without Syd Barret.
Re: Worst concert?
Worst gig was probably the Extreme Fest about 6 years ago or more now. That whole gig was a disaster. All the bands except Motorhead were sh!t. The staff were rude and mean to people. Then there was crazy white shaun smearing sh!t on himself, the controversy that caused was unreal. sh!t food, over priced merchandise, too many unknown rubbish bands oh and the sit down protest in the middle of one of the bands sets, can't remember which band it was. And the ticket cost was over priced. All in all a crap gig.
Re: Worst concert?
Thank god someone pointed that outA.Q.S. wrote:Contender for most confused sentence?!Touted wrote:I'm gonna have to add Sex Pistols. Nothing without Syd Barret.
Worst gig I'd say was definitely the streets at Oxegen 05 I think.Came out on stage and said "Hello Manchester!" which wasn't said tongue in cheek either. The Chorus of boos which met it was the only chorus that sounded good after that.He was shockingly bad.Atleast when Audioslave came on it more than made up for it
Re: Worst concert?
Amy Winehouse at Oxegen 08 is a contender for me. Dear God, was she woeful... I understand she's not in a position in her life to put on a terrific (or even passable) show or anything, but if that's the case then why did she waste our time by showing up?!
I also saw Trivium in the Ambassador on back-to-back nights a couple of years back, the sound for the first night was possibly the worst I've ever heard. They jammed a Metallica cover and I didn't even recognise it until a familiar drumbeat a minute or two in. The following night was great. They must've sacked the sound engineer after the first night or something...

Re: Worst concert?
And Winehouse got RAVE reviews about her Oxegen performance. I was like "WTF is this crap?"
Re: Worst concert?
MGMT in the Ambassador were really disappointing. After all the build up they turned out to be one of those bands thats great in a recording but terrible live...plus the crowd was the most annoying drunken tween fest ive ever been to.
Re: Worst concert?
I dunno which day you were at, but I was at the Monday and I thought they were great! There were some idiots there (one guy who kept punching people near his gf when there were any scrums was particularly annoying) but I enjoyed it.
Re: Worst concert?
The Tuesday was ok if not amazing. Good setlist, crowd werent too annoying, but just something blah about the whole thing. Wouldnt be in a rush to see them again... think its that they better suit festivals.
Re: Worst concert?
The Fratellis the last two years at Oxegen..
Must be the worst live band I've ever heard!!!!!!
Must be the worst live band I've ever heard!!!!!!
Re: Worst concert?
The Killers, seen them twice, first at Oxegen in 2005 where they were so poor that I went to watch Embrace in one of the tents instead who were brilliant. Wasn't the only one as when they started the tent was pretty much empty, then as the set went on it filled up so much it became packed.
Second time was in Marley Park this year, thought I'd give them another chance, yet again they should have just played the CDs on random play with some cardboard cutouts as it wouldn't have made any difference.
Another dishonourable mention should go to the Chili Peppers in Phoenix park, very poor and they really didn't want to be there.
Kings of Leon at this year's Oxegen were the biggest disappointment, I was expecting a brilliant performance, yet they came across extremely boring and uninterested. I was surprised to see the big scramble for tickets for the O2 concert.
Finally REM at the point a few years back, the one from the Live CD, horrible miserable crowd and it felt like they didn't want to really be there. However at this year's Oxegen, they were awesome and restored my faith in them.

Any gig I ever went to at Marley Park. Damp horrible muddy ripoff excuse for a sad venue with 1hour walkin/1 hour walkout from somewhere/nowhere close to the Dublin mountains. Ripoff Ireland at its best... If they brought Elvis back from the dead using his DNA you could'nt drag be out there.
